Twenty-four-year-old Eleanor Hawkins has been
arrested after she and several others stripped down on a sacred
Malaysian mountain, the New Zealand Herald reports. Now some are blaming the recent earthquake on the disrespectful act.
Hawkins
and her friends took off their clothes for a photo op, despite their
guide warning them not to, because Mount Kinabalu was considered sacred.
The group allegedly told the guide to "go to hell," according to the
official complaint. One of the hikers, Emil Kaminski, 33, posted a photo
online, which caught the attention of the local government, who are
taking it very seriously. Although Hawkins is the only one who has been
arrested, the others are wanted.
Tan
Sri Alfred Jabu, the deputy first minister of Sarawak, which borders
the mountain, said that the hikers' disrespectful actions bought about
the earthquake that killed 13 people last week. "Some places have their
own historical background and are sacred to the local community and, as
such, visitors to these places should respect the place, the local
traditions and cultures. We local people believe that there is someone,
the guardians of these places, and there is a form of order of
sacredness for those who go to the mountain to respect," he said.
Hawkins's father has come to her
defense, saying it was just a mistake and she wasn't fully aware of what
she was doing. Hawkins had been celebrating getting her master's degree
and was planning on traveling through Southeast Asia. Her father hopes
that the local government doesn't "make an example out of her."
Kaminiski,
meanwhile, has posted a YouTube video defending their actions and
calling the local government (and anyone who was "enraged over this
thing") stupid. "It's just a fucking mountain," he counters. He tells
people not to conform to local cultures and instead think for
themselves.
